Should My Children Take the High School Entrance Exams after They Decided to Go Abroad

In the process of gathering information about studying abroad, preparing for the HKCEE, IELTS, and applying for high school, both parents and children feel physically and mentally exhausted. As time went on, it turned out to be time to take the midterm exam. If the child is already determined to go abroad, does it mean he or she won’t need to take the middle school exam?

How exactly should I choose? Here’s a bit of advice from Huron’s editorial board for all the worried parents and students out there.

Q: Do I need to take the middle school exam?

A: No.

Ontario, Canada is rich in educational resources and is the top province for children to study in Canada. In Ontario, grades 9-12 are high school, which corresponds to the four-years between junior and senior year in the country. Therefore, many children go to Canadian high schools to study during their junior and senior years. So, what about junior high school students who have the opportunity to participate in the Secondary School Entrance Exams?

For a child who has already decided to go abroad, the score of the midterm exam has no effect on him anymore, so it doesn’t matter whether he takes it.

The advantages of studying abroad for junior high school children are, firstly, that the students are young and can easily integrate into the local Canadian environment; secondly, the students’ English accent is not qualitative and can be easily corrected, forming a standard North American accent.

If you take the exams, it takes time and energy, and education at home is different from abroad, students adapt to domestic high-pressure and compulsive learning. It is more difficult to keep self-discipline and too easy to become overly relaxed and unable to actively study. Therefore, it is recommended for parents who are planning to send their children to high school abroad; they make plans to send their children after their junior year.

During the four years of high school, the child slowly adjusts to the Canadian education system and teaching style, preparing him or her for future university studies. Furthermore, students who complete 4 years of high school in Canada are not required to provide IELTS or TOEFL scores when applying to universities. Many parents may not be aware of the impact of English language performance on the application of international students to universities. If a child’s performance meets the criteria for applying to a prestigious school, but the IELTS has not been successful, the school may not accept them. Students who want to apply to the world’s top schools must not let their language performance delay their future.

So, if you are thinking of studying in high school, you must prepare early!
